Windows 10 Update makes computers crash.

It can happen to you. Windows 10 Update can lock up your personal computer.

You need to have a backup plan if you use automatic updates. Microsft is now using customers computers to test things that have not been fully tested in the laboratory.

Yes, it is true. Microsft, the company that created Windows, is no letting home users test out new features taht have the potential to lock up you computer. If this happens to you, you hve to restore your system from a backup you had made earlier.

It is a good idea to mkadea backup at least once a week.  And  backup your dailt work to a remote storage thing. Wither a clound service or a portable device lyu have.

What can you do to stop this from happening? AFor one, hyou can turn off the auto-update feature in Windows 10.

Just now I found pthis:

Interestingly, there is a simple option in Wi-Fi settings, which if enabled, stops your Windows 10 computer from downloading automatic updates. To do that, search for Change Wi-Fi settings in Start Menu or Cortana. Click Advanced Options, and enable the toggle below Set as metered connection.Aug 14, 2015

Of course, eventually you will want to insll the updates, but only after you have made backups and set restore options on you system. Truning off the updates gives you time to do your work and gfinish your backups.

A New Silicon Surprise – AMD and INTEL together!

INTEL and AMD  are rivals. Not anymore.

Hard to believe. But They both have said they have a new product that will impact how we use personal computers for entertainment.

For the first time ever, soon you can get a personal computer that has the beet Intel CPU  and the best AMD graphics. Really? How?

Earlier this year the California based chip maker did  announce cw some new research into how chips can communicate without the need for motherboard wires.  It is a method of interconnect via he silicon substrate.

Think of a woman gibing birth to twins. The might be identical. Or not. That is sort of like the new silicon design troll Intel has invented.  For the first time two silicon chips that are not identical can be created on the samde silicon base material. And the work independently, yet can transfer data via the silicon base material.

OK.  That is just too simple. But you get the idea. Intel says that the two  different chips can be down with different trace size. The chips are separate, but are created at the same time and on the same base materiel. They have the ability to transfer data directly without the need for external wires.

If this is true, speed will increase and price will go down. Sometime next year expect to see some kind of home computer that is really fast with action games and can run high definition without an jerks or delays.

Here is a picture from Intel.

On the left are the chips needed to connect the main processor to the graphics interface often found on high speed gaming computers. On the right is the new design from Intel and AMD.

Small size can mean better results. You can expect  Better speed, lower cost. Potentially it could make it possible to build a tablet PC with the speed needed for action games and movies.

How to enlarge the image above.

Put  the mouse  over image. Right click, then select the ‘view image’ item. The will make the image go full screen.

News from AMD and Intel. Who will win?

AMD CPU will be better and cheap than Intel.

But Intel is about to spend $7 billion in Phenix for a new factory to make incredibly powerful super chips that can almost read your mind.

If you like to play fast games on a computer, you will like the news from AMD. Soon you can have a new PC that is better than anything made by Intel.

But meanwhile, Intel is going for a much, much better goal. Super chips that can make home robots a reality. Silicon that can understand what you mean when you talk out load. Not just voice commands chores,  but really understand what you are trying to say. Maybe a robot nanny to raise children. Or a resident therapist to help yu with your anxieties.

When? Very soon. Checkout these stories.

For Intel:  Intel to spend $7 for factory in Arizona.

For AMD: New AMD gaming CPU at lower prices.

Who will win? Booth.  Each will move ahead, bu tin different ways.

AMD will make progress in the personal computer market and related areas such as commercial data centers.

Bit Intel does not get most of its income from the desktop computer area. Intel is a huge company with a wide range of projects that bring in money. The desktop computer is a important part, but Intel does not have to depend on it. They have enough others things going to continue making money.

Expensive Anti-Virus. Worth it?

Do You Get What You Pay For? Maybe Not.

A recent article form PC Mag had this to say about a Software Product:

Pros
In testing, eliminated active malware and malware that launches at startup, as promised. Integrated HelpDesk remote remediation tool. Installs and runs in Safe Mode. Bootable recovery environment available. Free scan available. Certified by one testing lab.

Cons
Missed many malware samples in tests. Failed to remove executable traces of detected samples. No significant real-time protection. Expensive.

Bottom Line
Enigma SpyHunter 4 does what it promises, eliminating active malware and killing malware that launches at startup. But competitors deliver much more.
Hey!, I didn’t say that! They dis. Bear in mind that PC Mag makes money off advertisers and it looks like that are not helping a growing company. Why wold they do that? Judge for yourself.

Of course, you need a good anti-virus program to protect your computer. Some of the good ones have special coffers. You can find them by doing a search for ‘Free AV Software‘ and find at least five or six good ones. Each offers a better version for a nominal price.

You Can Still Buy a PC with Windows 7.

Microsoft might stop vendors from selling Windows 7 this year.  Maybe.

Walmart and some other stores are still offering personal computers with Window 7. As you know, most new PCs now come with Windows 10, not 7 or 8.

But why would you want a Windows 7 PC? Is it any faster? Does it make better use of hardware? I don’t think so. If Windows 10 was not as fast, somebody would have said so by now. So why do some want 7 and not 10?

Because Windows 7 is more of a classic design for the screen layout. At least from the first screen tall you see. But it is possible to ‘customize’ the Windows 10 desktop screen to look more conventional.

Windows tip for you: Find somebody who has an almost new PC for sale and recently upgraded to Windows 10. Ask if they still have the license key used for Window 7. If so, you might buy that computer and get it to boot either Windows 7 or Windows 10 each time you turn it on.

You can Google and find ways to  legally have both Windows 7 and  10 on the same computer. It really is legal.

triple_boot

The above is from my computer, the same one I use to e3dit ;this blog. It is an old Dell Optiplex 520 with a 500GB hard drive that has three different Windows system on it. It is legal.

Now Buy Windows 10 for $80 and get a FREE PC.

The catch? The PC is an older model made by Dell  or Hp and comes with a legal installed Windows 10 system.

You can find re-sellers  certified by Microsoft to have Windows 10 installed on computers that has come off-lease. So you can help save the environment and get a great bargain. These  are model that were made over seven years ago and have been retired to make way for new computers for business firms  who lease rather than t buy.

The real attraction is  the use of a very new Operating System that woks very well with these older units. It is like getting Windows 10 at a discount and getting a free used computer. Of course these do not include a monitor. However, some newer n TV sets make good monitors. So you could pair trhe older PC with newer TV set and have a great spare computer for you or a family member.

What is the down side? The warranty is for just one-year and you would have to send it back to the vendor. Also, you can not transfer the Windows 10 software to another computer.  The rule is not new.  Microsoft has always held that a single user license  is good only for just one computer.

My advice? Check all the details before you buy one. Still, at $80 it is very attractive. By the way, some of these older units can support dual monitors without getting another graphics card.

Some models are under $80 even with Windows 10.

You Can Keep Windows 7 for the Next Five Years

Microsoft said  last year that they would have a better way to update Windows 7. And it is true.

Yes, but it still is a hard thing for most home users to understand.

Here is a quotation for Microsoft about Windows 7 updates:

This article describes a convenience rollup for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers. This rollup package includes most updates that were released after the release of SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, through April 2016. This convenience rollup is intended to make it easy to integrate fixes that were released after SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. We recommend that you include this rollup package in the image creation process to make it easier to quickly set up a computer.

Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1

They plan to continue updates for Windows 7 until the year 2020. So that will give you nearly five years of life with Windows 7. Even it you prefere3 windows 10, for some things the windows 7 might make more sense. For example, your Grandmother might find Windows 7 easier  to learn.

How a computer virus can hide in any electronic device.

At the e risk of being called paranoid, I want to tell everybody that a computer virus can hide almost anywhere . A computer virus is some kind of program that deliberately alters your computer to do something you did not want. Such programs often have distributive names to identify the mode of infection. Malware,   Root kit,   Trojan,  Virus or Worm, you don’t want them in your PC, Tablet or Smartphone.   Too many names to remember. Let’s just call it Malware.

Here are some places such evil programs may hide.Registry of the System.

  • Free apps you downloaded.
  • Hidden areas of a hard drive.
  • Driver for a  old printer or scanner. **
  • E-mail from a friend.

Prevention is much better that a cure. Before you add anything to your Desktop, laptop or tablet, check it for the possibility of some kind of Malware.

Warning: Some planes on the Internet offer ‘;free’ help and you wind up paying a lot of money to ‘fix’ a problem they create. Watch bout!

** Yes, if you get a printer river from a source other than OEM., you run the risk of getting some kind of malware.

Install Windows 8 without a Product Key

Yes you can. It is so simple, even a child can do it. Hard to believe? Read on.

Early in the installation process, windows 8 asks you for a product key, which sold be a list of codes in groups of 5 letters or numbers. Fro ecample, BK73X-RD9CXR-LL2323-KZWN-CVXWBK , might be such a code, but it is not,. Notice I made a mistake. Does that happen to you?

Microsoft,  the company that producers Windows, has made it easier for those of us  who are keyboard challenged. You can just skip the product key request and  fix the problem later.

Here is what you do. Leave the entire link blank. That tells the windows installer that you want to do it later and you need the computer working right now.

Next post I well tell you how to enter the product key or postpone it longer. After I learn how.
